Spiral Stairs, Staircases, Balustrades and Balustrading
Slattery and Acquroff are one of Australia's oldest and largest staircase builders. Established in 1920 by Mr Alex Acquroff and Mr Ted Slattery (of Scottish and Irish origin respectively) they were both employed prior to 1920 by Melbourne's largest staircase manufacturer, Jones Bros who were located in St Kilda Road. Despite commencing their business just before the great depression of 1929, they struggled through the hard times by working out of the old stables at the rear of a relatives house in South Yarra and delivering stairs to the new homes of inner suburban Melbourne by wheelbarrow.
Unfortunately Ted Slattery died in 1935 leaving the business in the hands of the Acquroff family. Prior to the second world war Jack Acquroff entered the business to assist his father but was soon sent to fight in New Guinea. After his safe return the business prospered assisted by the post war building boom. Skilled labour in the 50's and 60's was easy to come by due of the influx of European migrants and as a consequence the business grew through the 1960's and 1970's. Jack Acquroff's son Robert entered the business in the early 1970's and has been managing director since Jack's retirement in the early 80's.
Since then the business has grown considerably, now employing more than 80 staff, with operations in Melbourne and Brisbane and the more recent addition of the Sydney branch to complete the East coast chain. Slattery and Acquroff today are renowned for their excellence in the craft of staircase building. Whilst methods of manufacture are poles apart from those employed all those years ago when Alex and Jack set out by themselves, the philosophy is exactly the same, and that is to supply the best available product at the best possible price to our customers.
