Floor design and construction

Floors can be crafted out of stone, timber, linoleum or tiles. Different stone materials include Marble, Granite, Sandstones, Slate stone, Limestone, Quartzite, and Bidasar. Floors start with a sill-plate made of pressure-treated lumber in direct contact with the bricks of the crawl space wall. All flooring is done either on top of this structure or a cement slab. When choosing what materials to use, consider the durability and style of the products.

There are three main kinds of traditional solid wood floor: strip floors, plank floors and parquet floors. A  factory finish, creates a no fuss installation as there's no dust from sanding or fumes from chemicals. On-site sanding and finishing can produce heavy fumes and a lot of dust. Both solid and engineered hardwoods are among the longest lasting flooring options and with decent care may never need replacement.

A quality laminate product is very enduring, due to good inner core stability and a tough wear layer. Laminate will stand up well to wear and tear, but if it does scratch, it can't be resurfaced like hardwood can. Ceramic tile is also one of the most durable flooring choices available. However, you must select a product that meets the needs of the space. With proper care and maintenance, ceramic should last the lifetime of your home.

Linoleum can last more than 40 years if installed and maintained correctly. Proper maintenance includes polishing your floor as the polish prevents staining. If a stain does occur, stripping and reapplying polish should diminish it.

Contemporary Floor design

A contemporary floor design can be created out of an array of products, depending on the level of maintenance you are prepared to do. Different types of wood are more durable than others. If you want a floor that stands up to heavy use, choose a species equal to or harder than oak, such as Brazilian cherry, maple or ash.
Natural stone produces a rich, organic look and a beautiful surface. It also creates a timeless design in any room. The array of tile colours available today is very decorator-friendly and encourages custom design effects. Solid colour tiles can create one-colour installations, or multiple colours can be used together to create mosaics. Tiles with designs are often used in decorative borders and insets.
Genuine linoleum, not to be confused with vinyl, is a classic yet still completely relevant today. Environmentally friendly linoleum is made from natural, raw materials. Lastly, laminate is the ultimate copycat of the flooring universe. It has an uncanny ability to visually reproduce the look of stone, wood, brick and ceramic is possible due to detailed photographic nature of the material.
