Woodworking and ideas for woodworkers
Slattery & Acquroff are Australia's leading spiral & timber
staircase specialists.
Woodworking is a useful skill for everything from furniture,
construction, toys and seasonal displays. There are simple projects for the
complete beginner, as well as complex plans for ornate designs. Before you
get started, it may be helpful to acquire some woodworking tools, set up
your workshop, and start with some easy projects.
Some basic tools may include a chisel, jigsaw, lathe, saw, bradawl, gimlet,
drill, gauges, hammer, sand paper, set square, screw, bevel, etc. A chisel
is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood
chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its
end, for carving and/or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or
metal. A jigsaw is a tool used for cutting arbitrary curves, such as
stencilled designs or other custom shapes, into a piece of wood or similar
material. It is usually used in a more artistic fashion than other saws,
which only cut in straight lines and exist mainly to cut pieces of wood to
length for building structure. In this way, it is similar to the rasp and
the chisel. A lathe is a machine tool which spins a block of material to
perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or
deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object
which has symmetry about an axis of rotation.
The workshop should be laid out for efficiency and for maximizing work
space. The table saw and table router should be centrally located and
surrounded by plenty of space on both sides for working with large pieces of
stock. The heart of the shop is the combination table saw and router table.
These stationary tools are positioned in the centre of the room to allow the
maximum area for handling pieces of stock. There is more than ten feet of
clearance on either side of these pieces, so large board and sheets of stock
can easily be fed over the surface. In close proximity to the table saw and
router is a sturdy workbench and assembly table. Behind the assembly table
is a set of tool cabinets. Plenty of well-organized wall storage is a key
element of a functioning workshop.
Contemporary woodworking designs
Simple projects to get you started can include a sawhorse, picnic table,
a bookcase, a chest, or a chair. One of the most important tools for any
wood shop is a good sawhorse--preferably a matched pair of them. Sturdy and
dependable sawhorses, superior to most manufactured ones or those made from
kits, are easy to build from lumber you may already have around the
workshop. Sawhorses may be made from almost any commonly available
wood, from scrap lumber to expensive hardwood. The quality of wood should be
based on the type of work it will be used for.
For the more advanced, projects will include techniques such as wood
turning, parquetry, marquetry, and solid and veneer construction techniques.
To become an accomplished woodworker, it is important to start with a strong
basic foundation of knowledge about wood, tools and techniques. Essential to
the successful completion of any project is an understanding of the design
process and an ability to communicate ideas graphically.
With over 85 years of experience in staircase design and construction Slattery & Acquroff have a solution for you. Click here for more information on our products and services...

Medieval Woodworking Resources - Furniture & Woodwork
http://www.medievalwoodworking.com/
Medieval and Renaissance Woodworking
This page grew out of a fusion of three of my hobbies: medieval/renaissance recreation, woodworking, and antique tool collecting. Most of what's out there on "traditional" (i.e.; hand tool) woodworking, antique tools, and woodworking focuses on the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries. As a result, I've collected material on medieval and renaissance woodworking for my own use.
